Six Ways to Increase Digestion

I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying “you are what you eat”? I can’t help but think of that NutriGrain Commercial where the lady eating a cinnamon roll on the train walks off with cinnamon rolls for ass cheeks. Then I start to question if eating a packaged cereal bar on the go is actually better than eating a cinnamon roll. Probably not. Let’s use an apple as an example. You have an apple, it looks like an apple, smells like an apple and tastes like an apple. So what happens to this apple once it’s been chewed up and swallowed? If properly digested, that very same apple becomes your hair, skin, eyes, nails, muscles, so on and so forth. You have not become the apple, the apple has become you. In that way, you could very well replace this saying with “You are what you digest”. Balanced digestion determines our strength and health. Balanced digestion is neither weak nor too strong. Weak digestion can lead to malabsorption. Digestive fire that is too strong burns leaving you with degeneration instead of regeneration. In both of the situations, the quantity and quality of our body systems decrease. Find better balance in your digestion using these six Ayurveda principles:

 1. Avoid over eating or eating when you’re not hungry.

 2. Eat three square meals with lunch being the biggest meal.

 3. Avoid processed foods, leftovers, fast food, additives and colorings.

 4. Eat warm, freshly cooked meals. Warm, cooked foods are easier to digestion then raw!

 5. Do not drink ice water or too many cold foods/drinks. (This puts out the digestive fire and is considered toxic in Ayurveda).

 6. Eat in a comfortable calm setting with a calm mind. Take time to say a special gratitude to the food and earth for nourishing the body.
